The Production

The raw materials. Precious natural resources.
Above all calcium carbonate, but also gypsum; these two materials are extracted from the FASSA group quarries, both open and underground, using modern technologies at the forefront in the sector. Selected and produced with criteria that guarantee a high standard of quality, they constitute the essential raw materials for the vast range of the FASSA group products. In the production facility in Spresiano (Treviso), besides the plant for premixed plasters dating back to the end of the 70s, in January 1994 a new highly automated plant commenced operation with the aim of supplying mainly the market of north-eastern Italy. Both plants are operated by a computerized control room, checking all the functions in real time. The paint factory is fully automated: from the extraction of the raw materials to the mixing, from the colouring to the packing and labelling. A technology at the forefront that ensures constant quality, high flexibility in planning and strong competitive power on the market.

The research centre. Evolution of quality.

FASSA has a particularly advanced instrumental research laboratory. The wide range of instruments available for X-ray fluorescence and diffraction, electron microscopy, laser granulometry and so on, means that the material can be analysed at a microscopic level and that its chemical and physical characteristics can be evaluated in order to select the formulations which best guarantee the quality of the products. The reliability of the material over time is guaranteed by special rapid ageing tests which simulate the most varied environmental conditions and can predict how the products will react. A group of highly specialized chemists have been given the delicate task to check every day the fulfilment of the stringent quality criteria laid down by the company, to find suitable and effective technological solutions, to define new products able to anticipate and satisfy the needs of a continuously changing market.

The Maerz Kiln. Productivity and respect for the environment

Lime belongs to FASSA's tradition, since the company was born as lime producer and has always grown in this sector. Today the production takes place in the plants of Spresiano (300 tons per day) and Montichiari (500 tons per day). The latter was commissioned at the beginning of September 2006 and conceived to guarantee the maximum from each point of view, i.e. in terms of quality, organization efficiency and respect for the environment. This plant is a unique example in Italy both with regard to its dimensions and the innovative inner structure. Both facilities are equipped with modern plants for burning, slaking and hydrating lime, as well as filters to reduce the continuously monitored emissions to the minimum. Furthermore, since Fassa has always paid attention to environmental issues and product quality, it was decided to opt for plants able to burn alternative fuel, such as sulphurfree wood waste.

In the factory in Spresiano (Treviso), besides the pre-existent facility, a new highly automated plant started the production of premixed plasters in January 1994.
In the same facility there are also a Maerz kiln for producing lime and a technologically advanced plant for the production of wall paints.

The commercial branch in Bolzano delivers the products in Alto Adige and Western Austria.

The factory in Mazzano (Brescia), which was commissioned in 1992, is an important production facility at the service of the vast region of Lombardy together with the plant in Sala al Barro (Lecco) that started production in 2005.

Thanks to the commercial branches of Mezzovico, Crissier and Landquart in Switzerland, the Swiss market is served too.

Always situated in the province of Brescia, Montichiari hosts since September 2006 a new plant dedicated entirely to the production of lime with a daily capacity of 500 tons. The production is devoted to self-consumption and to the other companies, which use lime in their production process.

Also in Piedmont there are 3 production facilities: the plant in Moncalvo (Asti), which was commissioned in 2001 as the first plant of the Fassa Group producing gypsum based materials with a complete production cycle ranging from the extraction of high quality gypsum from an underground quarry, using cutting-edge technology in the sector, to the highly automated rotating kilns for burning and refining gypsum; the plant in Moncucco Torinese (Asti), acquired in 2006, and the facility in Bagnasco (Cuneo) equipped with modern plants, including a double mixing line for achieving the maximum daily capacity as well as technologically advanced dedusting systems for reducing the environmental impact.

Thanks to its location, the production unit in Ravenna is particularly important. Commissioned in 2000, it not only stands out for some advanced solutions in terms of technology and logistics, but also represents an important starting point for a medium to long term strategy, which foresees the possibility of exploiting means of transport and distribution systems that are not conventionally associated with this type of product.

Located in Tuscany, the production facility of Molazzana (Lucca) was opened in 2002 and is backed up by the innovative logistics platform of Altopascio situated just five-hundred meters from the motorway exit,to ensure an even more rapid supply and service for builders of the whole Tuscany and East Liguria.

In Latium there is the production unit of Artena, not far from Rome, which became operative in 1988 and serves the market of central-southern Italy together with the plant in Popoli (Pescara) that was commissioned in 2003.

Last but not least Fassa is also present abroad since June 2004 with a very modern plant in Batalha (Portugal), near Fatima, which represents the first production facility of the Fassa Group beyond the Italian borders.
